Topic:Craft World with Wendy Rosen

Wendy Rosen, founder and president of The Rosen Group in Baltimore, Md., started her business in the classic entrepreneurial way: she saw a need others had overlooked, and she moved quickly and decisively to fill it. Twenty-five years ago, a potter at a local craft show informed her that craft artists desperately needed business assistance. Her interest piqued, Rosen set out to learn more about artists’ business needs. Within weeks, Rosen had uncovered a market for providing business services to artists. Founded in 1981, The Rosen Group was created to provide American and Canadian artists with the opportunities and guidance to grow their business and compete in the global marketplace. The company accomplishes this mission through its tradeshow, three arts publications and its nonprofit trade association.

The Buyers Market of American Craft (1982) is the nation’s largest wholesale craft trade show. Held semiannually, the Buyers Market offers artists the opportunity to create long-term business relationships with over 3,000 galleries throughout the United States and Canada. NICHE magazine (1988) is a quarterly trade publication for craft retailers. AmericanStyle magazine (1994) is the exclusive arts lifestyle publication for enthusiasts, collectors and travelers. The American Made Alliance (2005), the non-profit arm of The Rosen Group, works with federal legislators and officials to create and enforce laws that promote, protect and preserve the American craft industry.

In 1994, Rosen authored Crafting as a Business, which addresses topics such as pricing, product development and public relations. The book went into a second printing in only 60 days, and sold 1,000 copies in just over one minute on the QVC television home shopping network. Crafting as a Business is currently in its third printing. In 1997, Rosen produced Crafting an AmericanStyle, a 60-minute PBS documentary that explores the rich history of the American Arts & Crafts movement from 1900 to the present. In 2004, the documentary aired in more than 75 media markets across the United States. Today the documentary continues to educate audiences on the history and modern transformation of American craft.

Live Chats and Forum Discussions

Hi everyone!
Thanks for stopping by and reading the chat and participating in our Live Chat. I will be adding notes on the chat later this week in a forum set up after the chat. Please continue the questions for our guest on forum I have set up for each topic. ;)

*There’s nothing to do during a live blog other than read, watch and occasionally send in a comment or vote in the polling questions. * It’s not a chatroom. You go to largely find out what the writer has to say. An open chat with thirty or more readers turns into poor, disjointed content very quickly.

* Your comments are published at the writer’s discretion. They see everything sent to them but only they can publish your comments for everyone to see.

* Our ‘autoscroll’ feature ensures you’re always shown the newest content without having to refresh or scroll your screen. You can toggle this on or off by using the controls at the bottom of the live blog.

* Subtle sound effects alert you to new content as the writer publishes it. This can also be toggled on or off as you like.

Printing directly on to fabric ! 3 Replies

Just used the bubble jet set and freezer paper to print on to silk ! What a buzz. The handle of the fabric is much better than when you print on to paper with adhesive !

Next task

I've been asked to create some wedding invitations so I'm preparing a portfolio for approval.
I've already looked at lettering and initials and today I'm experimenting with hearts.
This will be the background and then I will add some lettering:it is a mixed media piece.
The heart is stitched newspaper ( what else!) which has been coloured with ink, gold acrylic paint and pearlescent tinting medium. After cutting out the shape I placed it on a double layer of white net and stitched round the outside to create a lacey effect. I then mounted this on a double layer of hand dyed blanket and added the outside trimming.
I'm not sure what colour scheme will be so I'm just winging it at the moment. However, I have permission to do "arty" and "whacky" versions as well as more traditional ones.My fingers are itching!
