what does anyone here think is better, to have someone teach one a particular technique and then put your own twist on it, or to experiment and figure it out yourself and come up with your own methods? My example of this is batik. There are so many variations and unique styles out there, but hard to find someone to teach the basic skills. I wonder if I should just forget the basic skills and just explore the medium until I discover what works for me and my work.. If I do it this way when I decide to teach batik to people I will have to teach it from an exploration and experimentation approach rather than a skills and technique approach. Doing the exlporatory method may limit what tools I can use though. The canting tool seems to only work if you have the right skill at using it. .. very hard to teach oneself.

Perhaps you could give two classes. One on the basics and the second on experimentation. If I am interested in something I like basics but once I know them I love experimentation.
