Be Creative!

Sue Bleiweiss

Hot topic question of the month - May 2009!

Recycle, re-use, re-new – three of the most popular words used these days. We’re all aware of the benefits to the planet when we recycle our cans, newspapers, glass etc but what about our studios and creative spaces? What types of things do you recycle or reuse in your studio to keep from adding to the waste bin?

I am always reusing coffee containers for water and cutting up magazines for ideas. But i do have a recycling bin at my studio and what can't be used ends up there!

That's a great idea Pallavi! I'll bet you end up creating some very unique and beautiful tassels that way.

I use the meat plates ,plastic containers as a palette for color mixing. I cut the magazines for ideas, I paint the empty jars, miniature bottles , parfume bottles as a decorative item or I put pencils into the jars .
I stock my dyes in used plastic bottles.
I transfer all the old and damaged anything belongs to kitchen to my creative room such as pots, glasses, pans, cups ,spoons .
I use them as a water container , in dying, stirring etc.

I throw all my scrap paper into a bin in my studio and then use it as a mask or to protect my work surface when I'm gluing or painting.

I use glass jars to store buttons, beads, small wooden pieces, sticks, stones, shells and bones. Old magazines are used to glue on. Tin cans are decorated and hold brushes, pens and tools. Colorful tins are cut up for mixed metal jewelry and assemblage. Fabric scraps are made into cording or added to collage. Clear plastic bags hold small pieces together for works in progress. Gift bags with handles store larger projects.

LOVE the tassel idea, Pallavi!!! What's the link to your blog?

Another thing I like to use for storage are the plastic bags that have the zippers in them. You can find these when you buy new curtains and sheets. Also candle holders/jars with lids, I clean out the wax and use those to store buttons or fill them full of Christmas candy and give them away during the Christmas holidays.

Since I love ice cream those cute little pink spoons are great for stirring paint with lots of pigment at the bottom of the jar.
