Fiber Arts/Mixed Media

Be Creative!

I've been wanting to make some 3-dimensional "quilts" for a while, but wasn't all that inspired by the proliferation of bowls that I've seen. Also, I don't have Timtex or similar, so I wanted to make vessels that didn't need anything more than what I had in my supply cupboard.

However, I don't have all the good ideas - what are others out there doing?

Hello Shirley
I have a fascination with the vessel form and have also been wanting to make some in fabric - I wrote a blog entry about one of my trials http://dragonfragments.blogspot.com/2007/03/weaving-with-textiles.html but am sorry to say it is still sitting in the UFO box -

Hi Shirley. I don't have TImtex or similar either. I have been wanting to make a house and also a vase/pitcher. I don't usually use a sewing machine in my work, which also adds to the problem of doing dimensional work. Anyhoo, when I make my two items (soon, very soon) I am planning to use several layers 1. the "top", 2. heavier muslin for body, 3. heavier web/interfacing, 4. a piece of cotton batting, 5. "backing". That's a lot of layers, but because I'm hand sewing I think it will make it capable of standing, if not, I may have to make a sleeve for a frame of wire.

I have made two small houses with timtex for one and soft batting for another. The timtex was much better for support but I like the softness of hand sewing on the soft batting on the other- my greenhouse box. I think I posted one on this site.

Hi Leslie. Your greenhouse box is really pretty.

Thank you. I also did a mixed media house of cards with the timtex.

I've created vessels by needle felting around wire frames. Its been a few years since I last made one, but I've got lots of new ideas I'd like to play with...

what is the differens between vessel , vase and bowl?
or is it the same thing with different names...and shapes ?

I think it depends on *your* interpretation :} and the end "use" of the container.
Me, i just make things that contain space, then decide!
