About Me:: The Freedom of Stitch concept was developed out of my tradition of advocating freedom of speech, and freedom of expression. Frustrated and fed up with non-creative careers, I started a zine. And everything got fun again! I collaged, cut, and pasted with breakneck speed--and it was liberation! I got a sketchbook. I started teaching zines and Text as Art at the Kansas City Art Institute and was energized by the creativity and passion I saw. I worked like crazy for the Kansas City Free Speech Coalition to give artists an annual forum for networking and zining. Happily, I was painting, studying, pasting, but where was the CRUNCH? One day in the studio, husband casually asked, "why don't you try stitching? That's textury, right?" BLAM. Just like that, the doors blew open. I cranked out ideas for new stitches, new compositions, and cool designs. Freedom of Stitch began growing into a world of its own and spawned the first series of Fearless Stitcher designs and the idea for liberating mixed media stitch projects a-plenty.
There's even a cool project book in in the works, and a documentary of women who have used stitch in vital socio-political ways.
Freedom of Stitch is officially a mixed media embroidery umbrella of sorts which welcomes artists of all kinds who are fearless in their quest to "mix and stitch".
Presently, many photos here are pieces I'm working for a solo show.
Into the Woods: the Mixed Media Embroidery of Victoria Crowder Payne will open at the Campanella Gallery in Kansas City MO in June 2009.

New Mixed Media Work in Process!

Above, I've added a slideshow of a 6X6" piece in progress--from underpainting to stitching. I'll add as I go. Also in that show is the progress of Autumn--from sketch to paint to stitch. I'll keep documenting the going--thanks for the encouragement and all the good questions! Now--go stitch up the place!
Check me out at SuziBlu's mixed media group--I've put up some pen & ink stuff from my sketchbooks which is totally different from the type of stuff I stitch--just for fun. Enjoy!

Work In Progress...and progress...and...

Some of my KC Art Institute students have been asking about "process". It's something I take so for granted that I often forget to illuminate it. The ning space seems to be good for this so I've started a diary of sorts to follow one of the Campanella gallery show pieces from start to finish--see it over at the Stitchin Fingers group.
