do you want to paint on it? if so you could prime it with one or two thin layers of gesso and you'll have it whiter than white. if you want to use the fabric it would be better to bleach it soaking it in hydrogen peroxide and exposing it to sunlig...

I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to bleach art canvas so that it is white instead of its natural colour. Any tips here for that process would be appreciated.

Has anyone ever tried mixing pigment into the wax and then applying it, then ironing off the wax? I am going to experiment with that and see what happens.

I took it at Sybil Rampen's place in Oakville. However, she just got him in one time. But, he does teach in other places in Toronto. It's not your normal batik. It's more painting with dyes and using the wax to separate sections of different colours. The instructors name is David Kibuuka. Try googling him. If you can't find him, let me know, and I'll dig through my old emails. But, to tell you the truth, I did one piece in class, purchased all the stuff, and then never used it again. Now, that's not to say I won't, just haven't gotten around to it. Too many techniques, not enough time. LOL!

Hi Janine,
I am a little confused over your mention of my textile challenge site, did you try to join or not, I can't quite work this out. I can't remember if you gave me an email to send you an invite or whether you intended just going to my blog to join. I keep seeing the words Request Sent and I can't understand if something has gone wrong or not. Can you let me know. All you have to do, if you do wish to join, is go to my blog: http://lets-create.blogspot.com/ When you get there scroll down and click on the button at the bottom of the page. Please write and let me know if there has been a problem because there is no way I can tell if things are not working properly except if someone tells me. Thanks again for contacting me. Regards Tricia

Hi Janine,
You are felting very similar to the way I do most of the time. I try to have a base to needle felt on to, sometimes it is possible to needlefelt a base but it is quite time consuming. How did you find needle felting onto Linen, did it stay put and did your needle work ok on it? I find that Merino is good for blending but unfortunately it does tend to show the pock marks. I have found if I blend Merino with a springy courser wool then it works better. I love trying to blend colours for myself. I just love colour though and that's my problem I would have a house full of wool and thread if I had my way. My pallete is never large enough. Well keep in touch and let me know how the work is going Thanks Tricia

I was only lookin at your work last night Janine, I was thinking then that you do have a very individual style. Amazing. So which wool do you use to needle felt. I have only began needle felting seriously the last month or so after wet felting for years I suddenly discovered it's possiblities. I am looking forward to seeing how your work develops Janine. Love your colours too. Regards Tricia

I had a piece accepted into the Grand National, at the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery. Opening day is May 9th. There will be an artist's reception, probably somewhere in the third week of May.
FAS (Fibre Art Studios) has two shows set up, but I have no idea which of my pieces will be included. The O'Connor McLeod Building in Oakville - April 25 to July 4/08. The Quilt Gallery, St Jacobs - July 2 to Sept 30/08. If you're interested in showing your work, you might check out Martha Brown's website. She holds a fibre art show at the Centennial Retirement Residence in Oshawa every fall. I think the next one is at the beginning of November. Many of the FAS members are usually involved. Check out her website - www.bluemoonfabricarts.com and scroll down the home page until you can click on the link. I don't think the entry form info is working yet, but she normally has a late August/early Sept. deadline if I remember correctly (but don't quote me on it).

batik updates

I have decided to focus my work on developing the batik and needle felting onto it rather than trying to combine tie dye and batik in the same piece. I am finding trying to teach myself the batik on silk quite challenging, but I will continue to work on developing my own way of working with it rather than trying to learn someone else's standard technique. So far I have found that I enjoy brushing on the wax. I find the tjanting tool a bit too awkward on the silk and I have found it isn't really… Continue

new entry on my blog

I have updated my blog at

www.artwithinme.blogspot.com

I am loving dyeing silk and needle felting onto it. So far it is the best media I have tried so far. I enjoy oil painting but I like the different effects one can get with batik and tie dye. Still working out how to best combine batik with tie dye most effectively.

Looking forward to learning shibori

Does anyone use the shibori (Japanese tie dye method)? I am going to be taking a workshop on it and how to combine it with felting.
I am excited because I will be taking my art development to the next level.
My aim is to move towards creating work that is done entirely in felt and silk using a combination of shibori, wet felting, and needle felting. Once I move into that I will leave the current method I am working in which involves a combined pieces in oil painting and needle felting.
