you can use procion MX with soda ash for celolose yarns(cotton, linen, hemp) and with acetic acid or citric acid for silk. It works on wool too, but the clors come out less intense than silk.

Quinn's Tree
The tree in my user icon (larger photo attached) was done on a piece of hand-dyed silk. It's painted with Luimere paint (shades of gold & copper), and the leaves and stars are made from polymer clay.
It is a block in a quilt made as a memorial for the son of a friend of mine who died from a heart deformity when he was very small. There was a particular tree he loved, and his parents bought a bench to sit in front of that tree with his name on it - that was the inspiration for the block.
