Off to Salisbury for a long weekend

Sorry i have not added a post for some time. I am off for a few days visiting my sister who lives near Salisbury in Wiltshire. We may go up to London for the day to see some exhibitions as there is a good rail service.

winter weather

A cold grey day, we walked near the sea and looked at autumn colours through the mist. Lots of inspiration, on the edge of new work,but not quite there.

more bulbs!!

Today I planted garlic,100 gladioli,and made some wattle fences in the little veg garden. So much work to avoid stitching! Still, its done, and the machine awaits...

sunshine in autumn

Today bulbs came- some of them. Ive planted 100 and am working on the next 100-making a grden from a field is not easy! I have made a dark border,a spiral garden, an ornamental veg and fruit garden, and the beginnings of a formal rose garden, and also working on a wild meadow- all in two years. Needless to say there are a lot of weeds too! I'm making pictures on the ground to make pictures on fabric, all one thing really. Except stitching dosnt ruin your jeans in quite the same way.

more sewing machine angst

Like fellow blogger karen, I am living with two much loved but ancient machines. They are Elnas,with horizontal bobbins. I will need a new machine soon, but have no idea what to go for. I want a fast machine, and I do mean fast. But I dont want the noise of an industrial.An added complication is that I live in the depths of the country and the not very local shop onbly stocks very basic machines. Any recommendations very gratefully received!

As to books for fabric journals the best one I have seen is The Art of Fabric Books by Jan Bode Smiley full of techniques and ideas.My sister made a beautiful fabric book last year about all the dogs she has owned over the years.I would like to make a beach/seaside themed one but not until I have finished the cloth figure I am working on at the moment,"Fagin" I'm have such trouble with his nose !!!

They work quite well on fabric. I've used them when I need just that extra bit of colour. It's really like using crayons, and then you wet them down with a brush and water. Spray with a fixative at the end.

We're far away from "hot, hot, hot" and are expecting a little freezing rain today (blech!) We'll probably have a couple more dumps of snow, but it's not as cold as it was a couple of weeks ago. It was really nice on the weekend. Bright, sunny and around 6 - 7 degrees c. I'm sitting here at the computer at 6:54 a.m. and hear a Cardinal singing out my window (can't see him, but do hear him). Of course it's still dark out, so I don't know what he's doing out at this time, but it's nice to hear just the same. Have a great week! - Anne Marie

Before this, I was using fabric paints, but now I don't think I will bother. No problem at all stitching through the acrylics. I have threadpainted a tree, but the rest of the embellishment will be in the quilting. Very dense, multiple flowing patterns, metallic and rayon threads. Once I finish that, I MIGHT decide to do some handwork if I think it needs it.

No real snow in the last week. We've had a couple of days that tease us with spring, but I'm sure that we'll get at least one more dump of snow. However, it doesn't look like it's going to happen this week. Rain, yes....but at least that will wash away some of the nasty grey stuff at the edge of the road. I'm envious of your climate. I originally come from Vancouver, B.C. so I know what spring in March is like. I do miss it at this time of the year (except the rain). It sometimes seems like it jumps right from winter to summer here. One day it's cold and snowy, and the next day hot, hot, hot. Of course, that's stretching it a little, but it's not a long spring like you get in a more temperate climate.

As for creativity, I've taken an extra day off next Monday, so am planning a creative four day weekend for Easter. I'd like to start work on a couple of small pieces for a show I'm in over the summer. Have a great week! - Anne Marie
