Thank you for sharing about your quilt. Your work is stunning. I am learning to do freeform knitting and crocheting and am drawn to your work as you try so many different fabric mediums. My friend was manager of Baron's for years and I used to sew my daughter's clothes as sample garments MANY years ago! I miss the ocean & warm weather, but also love the four seasons here in Coeur d'Alene, Id. I am adding you as a friend as I look forward to seeing more of your work. Linda

Hi Barb,
I love your art quilts, and congrats on the win with the healing hand quilt. It is outstanding. Nice to see you here, too, as well as on the FF board. Please be my friend.

Hi Barbara, Thanks for the friend request. I love your hands quilt - I guess as an artist hands seem sacred and magical. A warm hand heals, hands give strength and solidarity. Good stuff. What is your next project? Mine is an altered book - which I have never done before. Our local library is sponsoring it and has given away dozens of books to all of us local artists!! Kinda seems odd that they'd be GIVING us books to cut up! Have a good day. R

Profile Information

Hometown:
Ventura, California
About Me:
I'm a former home economics sewing & needlearts teacher, former costume designer, and a longtime creator of fiber art. I love making art quilts, freeform crochet, beadwork, knitting, embroidery, mixed media and "outsider" art, and just about anything related to textiles and fiber. I've been involved in wearable art and quilting groups for many years in real life, and with Internet groups since 1996. I live a creative life and I enjoy the camaraderie of other creative souls. I worked full-time as a geriatric social worker for 9 years, but got laid off in September 2009. Now I have more free time to create, and I'm loving it!

I appeared on the Uncommon Threads television show (Freeform Crochet Class, episode DUCT-136) with Prudence Mapstone and other members of the International Freeform Crochet Guild in 2006. I’ve been a part of several of the group’s annual challenges, two of which have been published, including Coat of Many Scrumbles (Prudence Mapstone, 2007) and Through Our Eyes (Myra Wood, 2008). One of my art quilts also appears on a CD cover (Cradle of the Moon, by Matt Stuart).

Art show win!

Last Thursday, Oct. 11, I received an award of First Place in the Professional category at the National Arts Program art show, presented by the Ventura County Arts Council for County of Ventura employees. My art quilt, "The Healing Mojo Hand", was the winning entry of the two art quilts I entered. I received a $300 cash award, and a prospective buyer expressed interest in purchasing it. Laurel Burch dies at age 61

I just found out yesterday that artist Laurel Burch died last Thursday. I'm so sad. I've been a fan of her work forever, and I got to meet her about 13 or 14 years ago at Bazaar del Mundo in San Diego. They had a little store there that carried her things, and while I was down there with friends for the annual wearable art show, Laurel was there signing her work and meeting her fans. I told her that I had followed her career since she was in the book "Native Funk and Flash". She laughed and said… Continue

An inspirational quote

I thought I would share one of my favorite quotes for artists:

"If we fail to nourish our souls, they wither, and without soul, life ceases to have meaning. The creative process shrivels in the absence of continual dialogue with the soul. And creativity is what makes life worth living." --- Marion Woodman

I will post some photos later when I'm at my home computer. Have a great day!
