Hi Kath, Yes I remember it, I'm the Visual Editor for Felt Matters, so I remember it well!
I'm just in Bristol at my daughter's at the moment, checking out the route to Highgate, I'm staying at my son's in Ilsington tonight, and have NO idea how to get to Highgate!!
Hi Kath,
Thanks for replying to my post, yes I do visit UK as two of my sons live there still, my third son is living in New York at the moment with my grandchildren.
Will hopefully be visiting them in NY in October then spending a month in UK in November. My middle son lives in Gloucester, so not too far from Swindon.
Keep in touch, Gloria
Oh, my goodness! So blown away that you noticed my little endeavors! I ordered your book about thread painted bowls and vessels from Amazon UK. Your work is stunning. Thank you so much for you kind comments about my little attempts.
Hi Kath!
Your work is beautiful! I'll be very interested to hear how it goes with the precious metal clay - I agree about silversmithing being incredibly hard work!!

Hi Kath, I have only just started felting which I do on an embellishing machine. So far I have only made 2 things... the first was some of my dyed silk felted onto a piece of commercial wool felt and then beaded. The second piece was a felted clutch purse. I used strips of synthetic fabric with Autumn toned merino roving and then did some gold embroidery down the centre of the strips. I used the same fabric for the lining as the strips.
I'll see if I can upload some photos. I've had a look at your work here and on your web site and it is just beautiful and very creatively artistic. I couldn't find the work with the Great Ocean Road. We are planning to fly to Adelaide this year and go on the Ghan to Darwin where our son works. Do you do your embroidery free hand with the feed teeth down?
Hi Kath
Yes we should be friends.. as you say....I did not realise you were a member here too. I have been for a while , but not very active. That may change....it is great fun looking at everyones work.
I think we do better on selling our art in other countries because we are from some place else and may have a different slant to our work than what people in the area we are selling are used to or have seen. I have given up showing my art locally as the locals think it's too weird. I'm in the deep Bible belt south, but not originally from this area, and have lived in bigger more urban areas and seen more of the world which I think really helps as as artist and a person.
I'd love some Cotswold. I haven't tried it yet. Thank you. I'll email you my address. I got to see a large number of British breeds at the Royal Welsh show in northern Wales. My whole trip was fiber heaven for me visiting craft galleries, textile mills, the Neolithic Village, museums, working weavers, historical and other crafters, natural dyers, spinning guilds, and local sheep farmers. I learned so much while I was there, and felt like I was finally home. I really hated to come back to the states. Love your grocery stores too.
That sounds wonderful and I'm so glad you got a royal commission. My biggest felting has been a heavy blanket 48 x 60 in Shetland, Jacob and Alpaca. It still needs some work and finishing so It's not showable yet. I like making long shawls and scarfs with most of them 12 to 36" wide and 4 to 8 feet long. I like working with fibers other than Merino and rarely use it in my projects. I collect international sheep breeds so my projects come from a mixture of countries. I brought back a lot of White Welsh Mountain, Jacob, and Badgerface fleece and it is excellent for felting. I spent most of the 6 weeks I was in Wales processing about 6 dozen local fleeces for my friend that her friends gave us while I was there so she could do felting and spinning with it. I even wore a shawl I made out of the WW and BF on my friend's driveway back to the US when I went back. It was in the 40F's when I left Wales and 110F when I got home to South Carolina.
I love embellishing my projects too with embroidery and beads. One Jacob shawl (can't find a pic of it) had lots of holes in it where it didn't felt right so I wove spider webs in matching yarns across all the open spaces. It also got sold in Wales. I did very well with my work in the UK better than I do in the US. I love it over there.
I'm hoping I can do some felting this Spring right now I don't have any work spaces like I did have anymore so I have been concentrating on rug hooking with a little spinning. I'm doing some experimental work hooking with just dyed fleece and will be trying to combine felting and hooking.
I was referring to Free Motion Quilting so yes drawing with the feed dogs down using straight stitch . But I set it on zig zag for the bowl
Ok shall just try wiggling the straight stitch
My greenman was all needlefelted, no molds. The doll eyes were attached to a base piece of stiff felt and everything was built up around it, It uses Karakul, Lincoln, Suffolk, and Tunis hand dyed fleece. The back was commercial wool felt redyed, cotton fabric lining, and the edging was my handyed, handspun Lincoln yarn whipped along the edges. The purse was sold at the Pembrookshire Spinning Guild sale day in the summer of '07 when I was visiting Wales for 6 weeks.
Thanks Kath
Have added a couple of photos of my original attempt at silk bowl, Did't take a photo of the second. Second cap was very fine in places as it was an inner layer of the original

I have just joined the site thanks to Di Smith. I really love your fly trap vessels. I bought your book after reading your article in Quilting Arts. Never having done this before, I made my bowl. My FMQ is not 'perfect' but I was happy with this first attempt. A smaller one done since was formed over a tall beer glass & ended up similar in shape to your fly traps!
THANK you so much for the inspiration and challenge.

Hi Kath,
Nice to hear from you. No, we aren't near to the fires. There was a radio report on them yesterday(Sunday). It was so sad. Worse than the Ash Wednesday fires of 1983. They think 40+ people have dies. Worse thing is when people panic at last minute and try and escape in their cars. Better to stay in their home.Radiant heat is the problem. Who knows how one would act in that situation? The urge to run must be almost overwhelming in the face of a fire torrent. We haven't been to Beachport yet.
Yes the colour of Australia are like that...brilliant. The Flionders Ranges partic Arkaroola are spectacular. Almost can't believe there is such scenery. The tree trunks of the gum trees is stark white. There are rivers of pure white pebbles...purple mountains. Vivid wild flowers. I had my first real job as a Governess on Innaminka Station in top north East corner of S.A. It was Burke and Wills country..Cooper Creek etc. The colours of the desert are gripping. Blood red iron stone hills, white sand...yes there is colour everywhere..it is the bright sun that makes everything more vivid.
Cheers Judy
