About Me:
I love textiles and have been working with them most of my life. I am always looking for new things to try and enjoy working outside of my comfort zone. With that said I would say my work is always evolving. I enjoy spending time with family ,cooking and of course creating works of art.

New technique

I would like to try working with an interfacing that can be dyed and stitched successfully. I read somewhere about this technique. Would anyone know about this technique and the name of some interfacings to use?

Thanks! I'm about to take my spinning wheel and go do a small country crafts fair. The weather is cooperating so it should be fun.

Hi, I like your appliqué work very much. I used to do a bit before I got hooked on spinning. Nice to meet a new friend!

thank you, my gosh- my techniques! I don't know where to start, I flit around trying everything - at the moment I'm working along two lines - one is painting on fabric then embellishing around the pattern I've painted the other is fabric collage, building up layers, I'll add some photos here once I've worked out how Ning operates, but there are examples on my flickr site in the textiles set http://flickr.com/photos/gramarye/sets/885055/
I've never done a self portrait - could be interesting to try, I think I would start my collecting my favourite colours.

Thanks for your comment: like you I like to play with new materials and ideas so a lot of the bits you see are exploratory pieces. For a while until about six years ago I had a business producing hand-dyed fabrics and threads for quilters and embroiderers and this included silks velvets and all sorts as well as cottons. Through this I've discovered the potential of a wide range of materials'and am especially fascinated by the effects you get with transparent fabrics. Have also discovered fusing which speeds things up a lot!
Though I sometimes work from designs I've made on paper I regard these as rough drafts and prefer to cut shapes freehand in the fabric itself (I draw shapes better with scissors than a pencil, though my drawing skills are limited. There is more detail on individual pieces on my blog: I'm planning tutorials on my blog but at the moment life keeps getting in the way! Have also played with angelina fibres, threadpainting and couched decorative threads.

All interfacings can be dyed and stitched successfully, I should think...if it can be fused onto something, it ought to tolerate enough heat for transfer dyeing. I wonder if you're thinking about lutradur? If you are, let me know and I'll send you the worksheet Dijanne Cevaal and I have written about it (it's free ).

Pelmet vilene/pellon accepts paint beautifully but not dye: I've used silk-paint (takes a long time to dry); I assume other sew-in interfacings will be the same.
Love the pieces you've just posted - how were they done?
