About Me:
I'm a quilt artist. Since being widowed in 2000 I've lived with my three cats in a large Victorian townhouse I'm presently decluttering and redecorating. Had a business as a fabric-dyer (now retired); before that I was a teacher. Currently exploring using non-traditional fabrics/fibres in my work.

Favourite quotations

" ... my natures is subdu'd
To what I work in, like the dyer's hand"
Shakespeare, sonnet 111

"Do I contradict myself?
Very well, I contradict myself.
I am vast. I contain multitudes"
Walt Whitman - Leaves of Grass

"Nothing happens unless first we dream"
Carl Sandburg

a brief history of western art

For those of you who have been following recent discussions on the QuiltArt List - or not, as the case may be - I have posted a brief history of western art on my blog. The big pinch of salt comes free. Find it at:

Journal quilt

My JQ is showing in Houston so I can at last show a picture!

Not a very good picture - taken at absolutely the last moment - nearly forgot to do it - in a state of total exhaustion after being up most of the night getting it all together to go. I'm still not sure if I like it or not. The theme is Carnival: Lee…

Sad day

My eldest cat Nibs died suddenly of a heart-attack yesterday evening so please forgive me if I'm a bit unresponsive at the moment. I've put a brief obituary on my blog.

Fame at Last!

On a whim I entered this photograph, taken at Leeds Carnival, for the AOL UK Photo of the Month contest. I had completely forgotten I'd done it until I opened my computer this morning and there it was staring at me from the AOL homepage ( http://www.aol.co.uk/

JQ finally finished!

Sometime way back at the beginning of the year I committed myself, as did many others, to sending a Journal Quilt in for the Houston show. I was (and am) fascinated by the idea of journalling in fabric. In the intervening months I have started several and had one almost completed. The whole thing ended up being a huge deal - it seemed important to produce something really good (I suspects I'm not the only one here suffering from the near-paralysing effects of fear of failure) and I ended…

Hi Sandra. Thank you so much for your kind words, both here and on my blog. I am doing all I can to stay positive and focused on the good things like my textiles. Groups like this and Stichin fingers are also a great comfort. I look forward to learning more each day.

Hi Sandra! Am so touched by your warm comments on my quilts - many thanks! Have just been E-N-J-O-Y-I-N-G (!!!!) your SPECTACULAR work!!!! It was like visiting 14 different and fabulous quilt shows all at once!!!! MANY thanks for sooooo much JOY!!!! My old (and late) Mummy was a War Bride - the first in the family (according to my old Grannie) to leave Britain since...1066!! Mummy married a Canadian and so I was born and grew up in Canada. With fully half of my family in the U.K., I have visited many times over the years and, in fact, lived in London in the late 1960s and early 1970s - GLORIOUS years!!!! I also see that you are a fellow cat-lover!!!! I am soooooo sad about your beloved Nibs, Sandra - how are the other two, I wonder - I have 2 rescued cats - Nigel who is approx. 18 has been with us for 12 years and Hannah who is approx. 12 has been with us for nearly 10 years. Both were hideously abused (Nigel was found with broken ribs and serious head and eye injuries and Hannah was found weighing approx. 5 pounds whilst fully pregnant!!!! To add to her misery, some psycho had taken a cigarette to her head...Dear God...) I am heartsick, heartsick, heeeeeeeeartsick to say, but time and loads of TLC have worked wonders on these two furry angels. Actually, the REAL wonder is that either of them ever gave humans a 2nd chance!!!! But then, animals have such faaaaar superior souls to poor old humans - Cheers! Charlotte

Thank you for having a look at my work. I need to update the site since a lot of what is there has been sold and I am going in a different direction as far as technique. More whole cloth sceen printing with resist rather than piecing, and applique with paint and inks used to add highligths and shadows.

If you look at my pics, the three black framed pieces all have transfer painted backgrounds. I have quite a few more pieces to work on but got side-tracked by other techniques. Be careful with the transfer paints, they are positively addicting
